What is Make Your Marq?
Make Your Marq is in honor of my brother, Marques, who we lost to gun violence in 2017. Although not a perfect man, he was someone who would help keep a smile on everyone's face and make them feel welcome. To honor that side of him, we created a non profit to help reinforce the positive behaviors of our youth to help keep them on the right track.
How does Make Your Marq reach the youth?
We identify young people in our hallways doing things the right way and engage them to become a part of our leadership council
There are weekly meetings with students on Mondays during their recess time. They can choose to come to our meetings where we either focus on certain topics or some type of skill building
By highlighting students in the hallways, classrooms or at recess doing the right things. Those students are given some sort of Make Your Marq gear to help them stand out for meeting or exceeding our standards
How is Make Your Marq different than other youth programs?
With Make Your Marq, we take pride in being able to reach every child we come in contact with. Most youth programs focus on reaching a certain type of child, which can be a good thing but there are some kids that can just be glossed over because they don't draw attention. With the focus on positive AND changed behaviors, we can encourage those who need to make different choices while praising those who have already been consistenly doing the right things.
